WinImage is a disk-image-management utility. A disk image is a file that contains all the disk data, such as files, FATs, the boot sector, and directories. By making an image of a diskette, you get an exact copy, as with the DOS Diskcopy command. You can read the diskette and write the image onto your hard disk. You can then extract a file from the image without using the diskette. You can change an image format and defrag an image.
This version offers compatibility with some CD-ROM image files and fixes minor bugs.
Although it includes some limited CD image support, WinImage focuses primarily on creating and managing images of floppy disks. Floppies, however, are almost obsolete, as any file small enough to fit on one can usually be transferred via the Internet, so the usefulness of this program is limited. That said, its unattractive yet practical interface makes functions readily accessible. It easily lets you create an image file from a floppy, then lets you add and extract files to the image. It supports a number of image formats, including its own native IMZ, ISO, and VFD. It easily creates and reads ISO files from CDs, but it only lets you extract files from ISO. Few people will find a need for this program these days, but for those who still rely on floppies, it works pretty well.
